A review of the systematic biology of fossil and living bony-tongue fishes, Osteoglossomorpha (Actinopterygii: Teleostei) Neotropical Ichthyology
Hilton,Eric J.; Lavoué,Sébastien.
ABSTRACT The bony-tongue fishes, Osteoglossomorpha, have been the focus of a great deal of morphological, systematic, and evolutionary study, due in part to their basal position among extant teleostean fishes. This group includes the mooneyes (Hiodontidae), knifefishes (Notopteridae), the abu (Gymnarchidae), elephantfishes (Mormyridae), arawanas and pirarucu (Osteoglossidae), and the African butterfly fish (Pantodontidae). This morphologically heterogeneous group also has a long and diverse fossil record, including taxa from all continents and both freshwater and marine deposits. The phylogenetic relationships among most extant osteoglossomorph families are widely agreed upon. However, there is still much to discover about the systematic biology of these...

A revision of "blanket-hermit crabs" of the genus Paguropsis Henderson, 1888, with the description of a new genus and five new species (Crustacea, Anomura, Diogenidae) ArchiMer
Lemaitre, Rafael; Listyo Rahayu, Dwi; Komai, Tomoyuki.
For 130 years the diogenid genus Paguropsis Henderson, 1888 was considered monotypic for an unusual species, P. typica Henderson, 1888, described from the Philippines and seldom reported since. Although scantly studied, this species is known to live in striking symbiosis with a colonial sea anemone that the hermit can stretch back and forth like a blanket over its cephalic shield and part of cephalothoracic appendages, and thus the common name "blanket-crab". During a study of paguroid collections obtained during recent French-sponsored biodiversity campaigns in the Indo-West Pacific, numerous specimens assignable to Paguropsis were encountered. Analysis and comparison with types and other historical specimens deposited in various museums revealed the...

A revision of Dichotomius (Homocanthonides) Luederwaldt, 1929 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Maldaner,Maria E.; Valois,Marcely C.; Vaz-de-Mello,Fernando Z..
ABSTRACT The monospecific subgenus Dichotomius (Homocanthonides) is revised and its single species, Dichotomius (H.) smaragdinus (Perty, 1830) is redescribed and distinguished from other Dichotomius species. Dichotomius (H.) smaragdinus is a polymorphic species and its distribution comprises the Brazilian Cerrado. For the first time, morphological variation and male genital organ are described and illustrated. We believe that this species might be endangered due to extensive deforestation of Brazilian Cerrado by agricultural and pasture expansion. Thus, we highlight the importance of preserving this very unusual Dichotomius species.

A safe method to control the anthracnose in papaya Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ferreira,Eskálath Morganna Silva; Malta,Camilla Martins; Bicalho,Jordana Oliveira; Pimenta,Raphael Sanzio.
Abstract This study aimed to propose a safe methodology for the control anthracnose caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in the papaya ( Carica papayaL.). In addition, yeast present in epiphytic microbiota associated with this fruit were isolated and selected as biocontrol agents, its use in classical and integrated biological control protocols with GRAS substances. For selection as biocontrol agents, the obtained isolates were tested for their ability to: produce antagonistic substances against C. gloeosporioides, not grow at 37ºC and subsequently tested for their potential control. Considering the total of 85 isolated yeasts, only UFT 5852 was selected in the above mentioned tests and due to this it was used in biological control tests in...

A Simple and High-yield Synthesis of Hexadecyl Ferulate and Its In Vitro Antioxidant Potential BABT
Nadal,Jessica; Pedroso,Flávia de B.; Minozzo,Bruno Rodrigo; Brito,Priscilla Salles de; Farago,Paulo Vitor; Vellosa,José Carlos Rebuglio; Miyoshi,Edmar.
ABSTRACT Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound with well-known antioxidant potential that can be used as a promising anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer molecule. Furthermore, it has been reported to have neuroprotective activity. One of the main problems, which limit its clinical use, is its low bioavailability when administered orally. This limitation can be circumvented by changes in their structure and/or for preparing lipid-based formulations. The aim of this study was to synthesize a derivative of FA, the hexadecyl ferulate (HF). This compound would be more susceptible to pass through blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to its lipophilic character. The HF was obtained by Steglich esterification and yielded 76.77 ± 1.35%. Its structural characterization...

A statistical approach to relationships between fluid emissions and faults: The Sea of Marmara case ArchiMer
Henry, P.; Grall, Celine; Kende, J.; Viseur, S.; Ozeren, M. S.; Sengor, A. M. C.; Dupre, Stephanie; Scalabrin, Carla; Geli, Louis.
The Sea of Marmara is traversed by the North Anatolian Fault system and also presents abundant emission sites of methane gas into the water column. In order to assess the spatial relationship between gas emissions and active faults, the distribution of distances between gas emission sites and the nearest fault is calculated and compared with the distribution of distances between a uniform random distribution of points (Poisson process representing the null hypothesis of an absence of relationship between gas emissions and faults) and the nearest fault. Interestingly, the distance distribution for the Poisson process is nearly exponential, indicating that the fault map does not have a characteristic scale other than that representing the intensity of the...

A strong link between marine microbial community composition and function challenges the idea of functional redundancy ArchiMer
Galand, Pierre E.; Pereira, Olivier; Hochart, Corentin; Auguet, Jean-christophe; Debroas, Didier.
Marine microbes have tremendous diversity, but a fundamental question remains unanswered: why are there so many microbial species in the sea? The idea of functional redundancy for microbial communities has long been assumed, so that the high level of richness is often explained by the presence of different taxa that are able to conduct the exact same set of metabolic processes and that can readily replace each other. Here, we refute the hypothesis of functional redundancy for marine microbial communities by showing that a shift in the community composition altered the overall functional attributes of communities across different temporal and spatial scales. Our metagenomic monitoring of a coastal northwestern Mediterranean site also revealed that diverse...

A surface kinematics buoy (SKIB) for wave–current interaction studies ArchiMer
Veras Guimaraes, Pedro; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Sutherland, Peter; Accensi, Mickael; Hamon, Michel; Perignon, Yves; Thomson, Jim; Benetazzo, Alvise; Ferrant, Pierre.
Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) and modern motion-sensor packages allow the measurement of ocean surface waves with low-cost drifters. Drifting along or across current gradients provides unique measurements of wave–current interactions. In this study, we investigate the response of several combinations of GNSS receiver, motion-sensor package and hull design in order to define a prototype “surface kinematics buoy” (SKIB) that is particularly optimized for measuring wave–current interactions, including relatively short wave components that are important for air–sea interactions and remote-sensing applications. The comparison with existing Datawell Directional Waverider and Surface Wave Instrument Float with Tracking (SWIFT) buoys, as well as...

A surface “super-convergence” pathway connecting the South Indian Ocean to the subtropical South Pacific gyre ArchiMer
Maes, C.; Grima, N.; Blanke, Bruno; Martinez, E.; Paviet-salomon, T.; Huck, Thierry.
We study the dispersion and convergence of marine floating material by surface currents from a model reanalysis that represents explicitly mesoscale eddy variability. Lagrangian experiments about the long-term evolution (29 years) of an initially homogeneous concentration of particles are performed at global scale with horizontal current at ¼° resolution and refreshed daily over the 1985-2013 period. Results confirm and document the five known sites of surface convergence at the scale of individual oceanic basins, but also reveal a convergent pathway connecting the South Indian subtropical region with the convergence zone of the South Pacific through the Great Australian Bight, the Tasman Sea and the southwest Pacific Ocean. This “super-convergent” pathway...

A synopsis of fern galls in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Marcelo Guerra; Maia,Valéria Cid.
Abstract Galls are neo-formed plant structures induced by species-specific interaction between an inducing organism and a host plant. Lycophytes and ferns are two distinct plant lineages historically lumped together as pteridophytes. A number of authors suggest low gall frequency in lycophytes and ferns, compared to angiosperms. This study aimed at compiling an updated overview of fern galls in Brazil, providing information on hosts, gall-inducing organisms and associated fauna. The synopsis was compiled using existent data and by updating scientific names and gathering new information obtained by the authors in fieldwork. To date, galls have been recorded on 16 fern species but none on lycophytes. However, the inducer was identified at species level in...
